Chapter 21
âGood morning, Mum, did you sleep ok?â
âYes, thank you, darling. You come and sit down. Sarah left really early today and it made me think what long hours Ancor does at the bakery.â
âItâs not like this every day. I think they just have a lot of orders to send out today. Now, what do you want to do today? Shall we go to the beach? Perhaps some shopping? We could have a walk and some lunch out, anywhere you choose.â
âHow about I make you a coffee and we sit on the balcony and chat? You can tell me why when I phoned from England and talked to you it was always âPedro thisâ and âPedro thatâ, but now Iâm here you change the subject every time I mention his name. Has me coming here upset the apple cart? You go and sit down and decide how much youâre comfortable sharing. Iâll only be a couple of minutes.â
Debbie was shocked. She thought she had hidden everything quite well, but her mum had picked up on it. It wasnât that she didnât want to tell her mum about Pedro, it was just that she didnât want her mum worrying about her.
âThere you go, darling, a coffee and some toast.â
âThank you. To answer your question, Pedro and I were getting on brilliantly and enjoying days out together when he had time off. Everything was lovely and then one day Bentor offered me a job running a new cocktail bar heâs opening. Of course I said no because my life isnât here, itâs back in the UK, but Pedro found out and he freaked out. His problem isnât really with me, but with Bentor. I just wish he would see that.â
âSo why is he cross with you? I donât understand.â
âBecause he thought the position was already his and when he found out I was offered the job and didnât tell him, he accused me of spending time with him purely so I could work my way into the job, not because I wanted to be with him.â
âOh dear, thatâs such a shame. Youâve been such good friends for many years, so you would think heâd give you the benefit of the doubt.â
âWhat do you think I should do about Pedro?â
There was a long silence before eventually Gina spoke.
âI actually donât think Pedro comes into the equation. My question is: why arenât you accepting the job? We both know you could do it with your eyes closed, but more than that, darling, you would love it.â
âI didnât accept it because my lifeâs back in England, not here in Tenerife.â
âAre you sure? The job is perfect and you have a home here, something you donât have back in the UK. Youâre on the mend now and this would be a fantastic next step. Promise me youâll at least think about it?â
âOk, Iâll think about it,â Debbie said hesitantly.
âGood. Now we just have to figure out something for Sarah. Your sister is doing everything possible to block out what happened with Alexander and sheâs avoiding facing up to the future.
