Chapter 9

Alex slammed the back of his rental van closed and checked his watch. He had props, cameras, and some lighting and sound equipment. It was a quarter past seven, and the natural California sun, shrouded in early-morning mist would provide perfect lighting for a couple of hours. By the time the midday heat burned off the haze, he needed to be done with their onsite filming, anyway. The band had the Power Rock radio gig later, plus he’d only hired the off-duty cops until noon to keep onlookers from getting in the way.

“Nothing like working under pressure,” he said, and meant it. He thrived under the knife. Heck, his last documentary’s anorexic budget had only allowed for six days of tour footage, but it had been his best work. To date. This one would cremate that film.

“You sure you’d rather have me here than Miles?” Jools asked for the second time that morning.

“How else are you going to learn? Miles doesn’t need the practice, and he’s got plenty to keep him busy. No offense, but I know he can handle the dubbing I asked him to do this morning. You could probably swing it, but I’d wanna be looking over your shoulder in case you had any trouble.”

Jools yawned. “I’m really just jealous that he gets an extra hour of sleep.”

“The truth comes out,” Alex said with a chuckle. “We’ve got time to grab coffee at a drive through. In fact, I’m sure our rock stars would appreciate some caffeine. As far as I know, people in their line of work don’t usually do mornings.”

He turned the key in the ignition, backed out of his parking space, and headed west. Thirty-seven minutes later, he pulled into the parking area off Point Lobos Avenue. Two black and whites had beaten them there. One of the tour buses pulled in behind him as he stepped out, balancing two trays stuffed full with heavy coffee cups. Jools held a third one.

Two officers in uniform came toward them, and Alex held out a tray for them to pick cups from.

“Thanks,” said the tall skinny brunet. He had an easygoing smile. “So, you want us to secure up here, down there, what?”

“I’d appreciate one of you up here dissuading people from coming down, and another at the film site to pick up the stragglers. It’s early enough that I don’t anticipate a huge crowd.”

The tall guy turned toward the short, stocky red-head to lay claim to the upper deck. “Not a sand guy,” he intoned, as they walked toward the street, presumably to scope out the area on the other side.

The bus door opened and Delia stepped out, followed by Dave and Jimmy. Speedy and a roadie with bleach-blond hair and muscles on his muscles exited a moment after them.

“Where’s Chance?” Alex asked Delia as she took the cardboard tray from him and pulled a cup out in a fluid motion.

“Still sleeping it off.” She sipped from the hole in the travel lid. A red lipstick ring and a loud sigh later, she spoke again.
