Chapter 14

As the sun crept into the hazy morning sky, Cohen and I snuck out of our hotel rooms and raced down to the outdoor patio area of our hotel.

While we didn’t get a chance to watch the sunset last night, at least today, we could enjoy the sunrise and the start of a fresh, new day together.

Walking hand-in-hand, we sit on the concrete steps overlooking the water and mountains. The sky begins to reflect splashes of reds and oranges as the sun begins to sneak over the mountains.

Sighing, I snuggle next to Cohen. The air is crisp and cool and even with my sweatshirt, I am chilling to the bone.

“I’m glad we did this,” Cohen states, as we watch the magnificence of the sunrise.

“Me, too,” I agree.

I know that today holds a lot of danger and situations that may leave me mostly in the dark. I doubt Cohen will share everything all at once, but I don’t worry about that right now.

Turning to me, Cohen gets a serious look across his face. “Henley, I need you to promise me that while we are all gone today, you remain at the hotel,” he begins.

I know that he isn’t trying to scold me or treat me like a child, but that is what it feels like.

I sit up straight before speaking. “Cohen, I don’t have anywhere to go. I will be fine, seriously,” I say, a little too harshly.

Cohen winces from my tone, but doesn’t say anything about it.

“I’m just ready for this to all be over with,” he sighs, glancing up at the sky. “All I want is to just live my life without fear that another insane scientist or ex government official is trying to destroy my kind,” he states.

I hate that this is the life Cohen has lived. The judgement and terror his family has endured are nothing short of horrific.

“Hopefully, you all will find a way to stop whatever is happening at this new facility,” I say, trying to put on a brave face for him.

He needs my support right now, not my sympathy.

“This trip could ultimately change my life, our lives,” Cohen says, staring deep into my eyes.

“Regardless of what happens here, I’m not going anywhere,” I explained, needing him to believe me.

“I just feel like fate has brought us together. It was as though we were fated to be together, and I don’t want anyone or anything to ruin this for us. You are my first spark of happiness, and I don’t want to lose that,” Cohen said, meaningfully.

I turned so that my body was in front of his, ensuring that he could see me clearly. “Cohen, we are meant to be together. Regardless of our circumstances from our pasts or even now, nothing will change that,” I said, and I meant every word of it all the way down to my soul.

We sat there for a while longer before finally making our way back inside the hotel. We met the rest of our crew
