Lelia crouched behind the door, eyed the passing guard through the cracked opening. He talked into his radio, then moved from her line of view.

The clack of his utility belt grew softer until the corridor was quiet as a tomb. She stayed still a couple of minutes more, then eased the door open.

One hand wrapped around the door handle, the other on the frame, she pushed against the hydraulics, cringed at the loud click when the latch took hold.

She sneaked down the hall, tried to picture the schematic from the kitchen. First, second, third door’s the charm.

She rapped on the carved mahogany. No answer.

The door handle didn’t budge when she pushed it down. She smoothed a hand over her neck and glanced down the hall. Empty. Reaching through the neckline of her dress, she snagged the two paper clips she’d tucked in the seam of her bra, straightened them out. Fifteen seconds later the handle clicked beneath her palm. She was getting rusty.

She eased into the room, glanced around. It didn’t look occupied, nothing out of place. She walked through a sitting room. Past a high archway, the bathroom door stood open. Sounds of shower spray drifted into the room.

Sweat broke out on her nose. She swiped her palms down her dress, grabbed a thin vase from the coffee table, and tiptoed into the bathroom.

Steam rolled thick enough to cut. Even in the misty heat, goose bumps rose on her skin. She lifted the vase, inched toward the glass shower stall.

She felt him then. Watching.

Over the sound of the shower’s spray, she heard the bathroom door close. Her heart pounded her ribs. She raised the vase higher, then turned.

A dark figure banked against the swell of steam. Over the mist, thick brows bunched, hooded his eyes to slits.

He parted the vapor, stalked closer, caused her breath to stop.

Lelia took a step back. She took another. Running from the panther initiated the chase.

He lunged at her. Slammed her body against his. A thick arm clamped her arms to her waist, he jerked her to him.

A long knife sliced the steam. He thumbed the handle, whipped the blade between them, pressed it to her throat.

“Scream and you’re dead.”
