3 Brush on clean water, starting at the outline of the fish and working out toward the paper’s edges. You can brush the water as far as you’d like. Remember to apply enough water for the paper to be shiny, but not pooling. You can add more water to any areas that absorb it too quickly. I’m using an angled brush, which gives me broad coverage and a nice edge to my brushstrokes.

4 Use one or more dark colors for the water. I use carbon black and Payne’s gray. Starting at the edge of the sketch and working your way out, add concentrated watercolors by touching your loaded brush to the wet surface. Keep adding paint, and allow it to move and blend naturally to create lots of texture. Remember: watercolor paints always dry a shade lighter. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to flatten any warping in the paper while the background is still damp.
