Kakō Moriguchi

When he came home from Tokyo, he started making sketches using compasses and a ruler, working in a small room adjoining the workshop. He spent long days working in there alone. “Kakō called all his students together and told them I would be working alongside them. He asked them to take care of me.” Tradition dictated that it was not the father who taught his son but a student, even if that meant a young newcomer. The student was twenty-four and already had seven years’ experience; Kuni had no experience at all. He started by drawing lines and geometric shapes based on exercises he had done at art school, but he showed his sketches to no one. “The truth is, I felt I was disturbing them. Every time I asked them something, they had to stop what they were doing to help me. I didn’t want that, but at the same time, if I didn’t ask any questions, I wouldn’t get anywhere. It was very uncomfortable; right from the start, I felt like an outsider. The worst of it was, everyone respected me.” The student who was Kuni’s assistant waited for his instructions, but Kuni had no idea what to ask of him.
