Tana spoke to the plow guy later that day and luckily, since the snow slowed, they were going to make it up the road. When she went to Neilâs door to tell him as much, he told her to inform him when the plow was done and slammed the door. Even though he was still being unpleasant, at least he was no longer flirting.
When the plow finally came up the drive, a cab followed and Neil and his crew stalked out without a word.
Tana was relieved to see them gone. After they left, the bell above the door tinged and she looked up to see Bea.
âHey girl, this is a surprise,â Tana said, rounding the desk.
Bea looked worried, but instantly relaxed when she saw Tana. She ran to hug her like they hadnât seen each other in months. âOh Tan, Iâm so glad youâre okay.â
âOf course I am. We were just snowed in. You know Alise keeps enough food up here to feed a small army.â
âNo, not that. I was worried that -,â she stopped mid-sentence and blinked at me, sniffing the air.
âWhatâs going on, Bea? Youâre scaring me.â Before she got to answer, Amon came down the stairs and stopped when he saw Bea.
âWhat are you doing here?â Bea asked in an accusatory voice.
Amon stood frozen by the stairs, as if unable to move.
âDo you know each other?â Tana asked.
âNo,â they said at the same time.
âWe need to talk,â Bea said. âYou too,â she pointed at Amon.
This did not seem good.
They all walked to Tanaâs room in silence. Tanaâs mind was reeling. What was going on? Bea and Amon said they didnât know each other, but that didnât seem true.
Were they together? Memories from before came flooding back and she wanted to run. But she needed to know, so she followed.
Once the door was shut, Bea wasted no time. âWhat the hell are you doing here?â she asked Amon again.
âI- I live here,â he said.
âWhat?â Tana asked. âWhat do you mean you live here?â
âWhy?â Bea asked. âI thought your kind loved traipsing around, causing chaos.â
Your kind? Tana was trying to wrap her head around this conversation, but had no clue what was going on.
âI was summoned and hexed here. Iâve been here for a long time.â Amon responded, looking at his joined hands.
âImpossible. I would have noticed by now.â Bea accused once again.
âIâve never seen you here till the other night,â Amon said, voice rising. âAnd how did you find me anyway?â
âAnd why does she smell of you? What did you do to her?â Bea continued, ignoring his question.
âThat isnât any of your business,â he retorted.
âAlright!â Tana yelled. Her volume made them both stop and remember she was still standing there. âWhat the fuck is going on?â
They both went silent, staring at each other. âTell me. Now.â
âFine,â Bea said. âBut I need you to keep an open mind.â
Tana nodded, perching on the edge of the hope chest at the foot of her bed. She was prepared for the worst.
âIâm a witch,â Bea said.
