Tana spoke to the plow guy later that day and luckily, since the snow slowed, they were going to make it up the road. When she went to Neil’s door to tell him as much, he told her to inform him when the plow was done and slammed the door. Even though he was still being unpleasant, at least he was no longer flirting.

When the plow finally came up the drive, a cab followed and Neil and his crew stalked out without a word.

Tana was relieved to see them gone. After they left, the bell above the door tinged and she looked up to see Bea.

“Hey girl, this is a surprise,” Tana said, rounding the desk.

Bea looked worried, but instantly relaxed when she saw Tana. She ran to hug her like they hadn’t seen each other in months. “Oh Tan, I’m so glad you’re okay.”

“Of course I am. We were just snowed in. You know Alise keeps enough food up here to feed a small army.”

“No, not that. I was worried that -,” she stopped mid-sentence and blinked at me, sniffing the air.

“What’s going on, Bea? You’re scaring me.” Before she got to answer, Amon came down the stairs and stopped when he saw Bea.

“What are you doing here?” Bea asked in an accusatory voice.

Amon stood frozen by the stairs, as if unable to move.

“Do you know each other?” Tana asked.

“No,” they said at the same time.

“We need to talk,” Bea said. “You too,” she pointed at Amon.

This did not seem good.

They all walked to Tana’s room in silence. Tana’s mind was reeling. What was going on? Bea and Amon said they didn’t know each other, but that didn’t seem true.

Were they together? Memories from before came flooding back and she wanted to run. But she needed to know, so she followed.

Once the door was shut, Bea wasted no time. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asked Amon again.

“I- I live here,” he said.

“What?” Tana asked. “What do you mean you live here?”

“Why?” Bea asked. “I thought your kind loved traipsing around, causing chaos.”

Your kind? Tana was trying to wrap her head around this conversation, but had no clue what was going on.

“I was summoned and hexed here. I’ve been here for a long time.” Amon responded, looking at his joined hands.

“Impossible. I would have noticed by now.” Bea accused once again.

“I’ve never seen you here till the other night,” Amon said, voice rising. “And how did you find me anyway?”

“And why does she smell of you? What did you do to her?” Bea continued, ignoring his question.

“That isn’t any of your business,” he retorted.

“Alright!” Tana yelled. Her volume made them both stop and remember she was still standing there. “What the fuck is going on?”

They both went silent, staring at each other. “Tell me. Now.”

“Fine,” Bea said. “But I need you to keep an open mind.”

Tana nodded, perching on the edge of the hope chest at the foot of her bed. She was prepared for the worst.

“I’m a witch,” Bea said.
